Colombian presidential hopeful for Cambio Radical, German Vargas Lleras, denied rumors Tuesday that he might join Partido de la U’s campaign for the presidency, if Juan Manuel Santos’ vice presidential candidate Angelino Garzon resigns, reports RCN Radio.
Speaking in the city of Manizales, in the Caldas department of central Colombia, Vargas Lleras dismissed the rumors and went on to ask Santos’ party not to “seek to disqualify their opponents through low strategies” in a race which had so far been “decent and gentlemanly”.
In March, Vargas Lleras had talked about forming an alliance with Liberal Party presidential candidate Rafael Pardo, but the offer was ruled out by Pardo, who described it as “not viable”.
In April, Vargas Lleras commented that if he hadn’t got enough votes to enter into the second round of elections, he would vote for Partido de la U.
On May 30 Colombians will cast their votes to elect their nation’s next president.
