Uribe visits former chief of staff in jail

Colombia’s ex-President Alvaro Uribe on Sunday visited his former chief of staff who is incarcerated while on trial for his alleged role in the illegal wiretapping of government opponents.

The former president visited his former right hand Bernardo Moreno at the National Police’s Study Center where the disgraced official is held.

News website Terra reported that Uribe’s spokesman had described the hour-and-a-half meeting as a “friendly visit.”

Moreno is one of a number of close Uribe aides who have recently been incarcerated. One week before his visit to Moreno, Uribe visited former Agriculture Minister Andres Felipe Arias who was arrested on suspicion of having embezzled $25 million in government subsidies.

The former President insists his political allies are innocent and he is a victim of a “publicity show” to discredit his administration.
