Uribe to attend UNASUR meeting on Haiti

Colombian President Alvaro Uribe will attend a Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) meeting in Quito on Thursday to discuss the organization’s aid package to Haiti.

Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa called the meeting to discuss what the regional organization can offer in humanitarian aid to the Caribbean nation devastated by an 7.0-magnitude earthquake on January 12.

Uribe was the first of the twelve regional UNASUR leaders to confirm his attendance but it is unclear if he will meet personally with Correa, El Espectador reported.

Colombia and Ecuador are in the process of repairing diplomatic relations damaged by a Colombian attack on a FARC camp in Ecuadorean territory in March 2008.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez has not yet indicated whether he will attend the meeting.
