Truckers end strike

Colombia’s truckers association ACC ended a 20-day old strike after talking to President Alvaro Uribe.

The government  last weekend already came to an agreement with ACC president Jorge Garcia, but the latter was sacked by his organization, because he failed to hold talks with the board of the union, who was against the content of the deal made.

New ACC director Pedro Aguilar announced that the board now did come to agreement with the government, after talking to the President himself Saturday.

The truckers demanded fuel prices to be lowered, now the price of oil has plummeted and is worth less than half than a year ago, while fuel prices practically are the same as a year ago.

Additionally, the truckers wanted the government to keep their promises made that made the truckers end their 2008 strike.

The government and former director had agreed that the government announcememt to lowere fuel prices with 400 pesos was enough to end the strike.

After the support for the strike after this deal plummeted and parts of the country’s truckers went back to work normally, the board decided to accept the same offer and officially end the strike.
