The Supreme Court judge who was sued by Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe for
slander does not want to reconcile with Uribe, local media reported on Wednesday.
Uribe and judge Cesar Julio Valencia Copete were to meet before the Commission of Accusations to reconcile on Wednesday morning. While Uribe showed up, Valencia refused to attend.
Valencia is not interested in a conciliation. Because the act of conciliation of a complaint is not mandatory, the judge “makes use of his legal right not to reconcile,” Valencia said in a statement. The former Supreme Court judge prefers that the legal proceedings continue their normal course.
Uribe sued Valencia
in May for insult and slander after the magistrate denounced the
President for calling him to be informed about whether the President’s
cousin, former senator Mario Uribe, was
investigated for his alleged ties to paramilitary death squads.
The magistrate is one of the Supreme Court judges that allegedly was
illegally monitored by Colombia’s intelligence service DAS. A number of the
President’s closest aides are investigated for allegedly having ordered
to wiretap the judge.
