An air ambulance crash in the early hours of Wednesday morning has left a patient, medical staff, two pilots and a family member of the patient dead.

Colombian Civil Aeronautics has confirmed the Beechcraft King Air 90 was traveling between Bogota and in the department of Caqueta.  When it was over Villavicencio,  the pilot reported an emergency and requested clearance to land at the Vanguardia airport in the central Colombian state of Meta.

The control tower cleared the landing, but half a mile short of the runway, the aircraft exploded in the air and crashed.

All six people aboard were confirmed dead. Authorities began an investigation of the exact cause of the crash.
