Second round out of sight as Medellin lose to Racing Club

Independiente Medellin are unlikely to survive the group stage in the Copa Libertadores after suffering a 1-0 defeat by Racing Club of Uruguay on Thursday.

After the two teams played out a goalless draw last week, it became even more vital for Medellin to collect three points from their second meeting with the Uruguayans.

But it was not meant to be in Montevideo, where Santiago Ostolaza scored the only goal of the match in Racing’s favor at 75 minutes.

Ten minutes later, Medellin’s Paraguayan forward Edison Gimenez was red-carded, which further affected Medellin’s chance of a comeback.

With just two rounds of games left to go, Medellin remain in third place at four points from second-placed Racing. Corinthians of Brazil lead the group while Paraguayan side Cerro Porteño are stuck in last place.
