Even Colombia’s beauty queens cannot reign over Mother Nature. A parade by the 26 Miss Colombia hopefuls came close to a natural disaster when the heavens opened on Sunday.
The candidates were preparing to showcase their flawless natural beauty for members of the Professionals Club when suddenly large drops of rain began to fall.
The beauties quickly ran for cover to protect their health and designer dresses. But our brave queens refused to let the rain truly dampen the evening. As the drops continued to fall, they laughed and joked with guests, posed for pictures and did interviews with the media.
The president of the National Beauty Contest, Raimundo Angulo, also managed to remain calm. “Nothing can be done about the planet,” he wisely told El Universal with a smile.
The downpour soaked the candidates’ pink and white chairs, along with the catwalk and stage. Once it died down, the ladies took a walk along a shortened version of the catwalk, protected by umbrellas. Miss Cartagena, Antioquia, Valle, Tolima y Santander proved to be the most admired by the evening’s attendees.
It’s not the first time rain has put a spanner in the works – indeed rain has fallen at every Professional Club’s Miss Colombia event, save last year’s show. But the management never learns, grumbled one club member. He told El Universal, “Each year is exactly the same – we spend a lot of money preparing a spectacular show but never imagine that it might rain. We always end up watching the parade in the newstands.”
