Nevado del Ruiz eruption less likely

Colombian volcanologists reported that seismic activity inside the Nevado del Ruiz volcano has decreased.

Local authorities have reduced the alert level from orange to yellow following a report issued by the Manizales Volcanological and Seismological Observatory.

Director of the National Unit for Risk Management, Carlos Ivan Marquez, warned the behavior of the crater remains unstable, meaning, “the alert level can increase to orange or drop to green at any time.”

Marquez advised residents near the Nevado del Ruiz in the departments of Tolima and Caldas to remain attentive to the volcano’s activity.

He emphasized the need for those living within a six-mile radius of the volcano to develop preventative measures against avalanches.

The last eruption of the volcano in 1985 wiped out the town of Armero and killed around 25,000 people.
