Popular travel website wikitravel.org picked Colombia’s second largest city Medellin as “Destination of the Month” for February.
On the website, Medellin is praised for its resurgence following the city’s extremely violent period in the 1980s and 1990s. Pueblito Paisa, a mock-colonial settlement on a hill on the south-west of the city, and the city’s main cathedral on the central Parque Bolivar are mentioned as highlights for tourists.
According to the mayor’s office, the city’s hotel industry reported a 12% increase in visitors in 2009 compared to the year before.
Medellin is Colombia’s third-largest tourist destination after Bogota and Cartagena.
Previous Destinations of the Month include the Japanese city of Nara and the Danish capital Copenhagen.
