The classic Broadway show Mamma Mia! makes its way to Colombia after many international tours and will be shown in the Jorge Gaitan theater in Bogota from August 3 until August 23, Colombian media reported on Tuesday.
Since its inception in 1999, 54 million people all over the world have attended Mamma Mia performances that have reached audiences in the United States, Germany, Japan, Austria, and in a few months Colombia, according to the show’s website.
“I had never been to Colombia, and found the perfect opportunity to share the show with an entirely new audience,” said Stephen Gabriel, president of Worklight Productions that produces Mamma Mia!
“After many months of planning and hard work, we are very excited to share this acclaimed Broadway musical with the Colombian public,” said Gabriel in an interview with Colombia’s El Tiempo newpaper.
The musical is a look back to the hits of the 1970s and has kept alive the music of ABBA, a Swedish pop band. ABBA is responsible for hits like “Mamma Mia,” “The Winner Takes it All,” and “Dancing Queen.”
In May 2010, ABBA performed in Bogota on Mother’s day, reported Bogota’s national radio station, W Radio. The quartet included Benny Andersson, Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Agnetha Faltskog.
Mamma Mia is a story about a young woman, Sophie, who is about to get married and wants her father to walk her down the aisle. Here is where the story deepens as Sophie, eager to find her father, reads her mother’s diary and finds there are three possible men and sends them an invitation to meet her. When the men arrive, Sophie’s mother, Donna is angered but the young romance soon branches out and leaves the mother in a love triangle.
In 2008, Mamma Mia! was made into a movie starring Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan, and Colin Firth. The movie was nominated for 15 awards and won nine. The honors ranged from Best International Actress for Meryl Streep to a National Movie Award for best musical, according to IMDB, a movie, television, and celebrity profile website.
Transitioning from the big screen to a theater in Bogota, Gabriel has more expectations from the performance.
“We are very excited about bringing Mamma Mia! to Colombian audiences and we expect them to stand-up and dance at the end of each presentation.”
