Lula and Uribe promote summit for Amazonian countries

Brazilian President Lula da Silva announced that an environmental summit will be held for leaders of all nations with territory in the Amazon on November 26 in the Brazilian city of Manaus.

According to Lula, Colombia’s President Alvaro Uribe has agreed to the idea, in which the nine leaders will aim to determine a unified approach to the annual Climate Change summit which will take place in Copenhagen in December, reported Colombian media on Monday.

The business council between Brazil and Colombia has involved Uribe touring various Brazilian territories, discussing investment proposals and trade issues. The main event will take place over Monday and Tuesday and will comprise of conferences attended by 82 Colombian companies and 140 potential Brazilian buyers.

Lula was quoted saying “we must recognize that we are the largest economy in Latin America and must excersise our role throughout the integration of Latin American countries.” This integration is intended to generate unity, employment and income as well as helping to reduce carbon emissions, reported news site Prensa Latina.

The Colombian Foreign Minister, Jaime Bermudez, stated that this tenth bilateral meeting between the Brazil and Colombia aims to offer Colombia investment and tourism opportunities and is not looking for mediation from Brazil with regard to alleviating tensions between Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela, reported newspaper El Espectador on Monday.
