Senior diplomat Kevin Whitaker will be the United States’ new ambassador to Colombia, local media reported Monday.

Whitaker is currently the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for South America in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs.

The diplomat has never before been ambassador, but has served as deputy chief of mission in the UK, Jamaica, Honduras, Nicaragua and Venezuela.

The Virginia native reportedly will succeed sitting ambassador Michael McKinley who has served his three-year term as Washington’s representative in Bogota.

According to weekly Semana, Whitaker’s appointment is a near fact and only fails the official confirmation of US President Barack Obama and the approval of that country’s senate.
