Coronell claims Uribe also intercepted his emails

Journalist Daniel Coronell told a Congressional committee that former President Alvaro Uribe intercepted his personal emails as well as his phone calls.

The Semana columnist and incoming director of Univision made this claim Thursday in front of the Chamber of Representatives Accusations Committee.

Coronell maintained that former President Alvaro Uribe was the main person responsible for intercepting his phone calls during the government wiretapping scandal, and stated that his cell phone and personal emails were also spied on, Caracol Radio reported.

The key piece of evidence presented, according to newspaper El Espectador, made reference to a document in which Martha Leal, former assistant director of Colombia’s intelligence agency DAS, ordered Coronell’s phone calls to be intercepted.

The testimony made by Coronell was part of a wider investigation into Uribe’s role in his administration’s wiretapping scandal. The investigation began in 2010 but was only made public this past February. Many members of Uribe’s staff, including members of DAS, have been incriminated during the process.
