It’s time for a ‘fresh look’ at war on drugs: Santos

It is time to rethink the fight against drugs and “give a fresh look” to the theme of drug trafficking, says Colombia’s President Juan Manuel Santos.

President Santos insisted in the necessity of approaching the debate of narco-trafficking from “more fresh” perspectives and from “new formulas” during a presentation of a report to the prestigious London School of Economics about the results of the fight against drugs, reported newspaper El Tiempo.

“The national government firmly believes that the time has arrived to give a fresh look (to the anti-drugs strategy) and invite world leaders, academics and experts to begin a serious debate, open and honest about this war,” said Santos.

The report was presented Tuesday in London during an event in which the Colombian ambassador to England, Mauricio Rodriguez, met with world experts to analyze the achievements and the failures accumulated in more than a century of prohibitionist politics.

This problem “is global and demands a global solution,” added the president.

Santos referred to the “profound concern” of Colombia about the situation that the country currently finds itself, in which various other nations are facing the violence and the corruption that for decades has plagued Colombia.

However, the president also emphasized the validity of the debate and the “historic results” of Colombia in the fight against drug trafficking, which he attributed to various “decades of hard work and sacrifice.”
