ICC to monitor Colombia’s ‘false positive’ cases

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has requested access to all reports released in Colombia that pertain to extra judicial killings, although it is not currently directly processing any “false positives” cases, reports El Tiempo.

Court prosecutor Luis Moreno Ocampo added reports on false positives – which will include information released by Colombia’s prosecutor general and foreign ministry – to the list of matters that the ICC already monitors in Colombia, including “parapolitics,” the Justice and Peace process and activities by illegal armed groups.

Moreno Ocampo expressed concern that soldiers arrested for their responsibility in false positives, have since been released. The ICC prosecutor said that the court will continue to monitor the situation.

Colombia is one of six nations that is monitored by the ICC. The Andean nation ratified full cooperation with the court in November 2009 and much debate as to the extent of the ICC’s jurisdiction ensued.

The court has stressed that it will only intervene in Colombia when there is a failure by the State to bring war criminals, or those who have committed crimes against humanity, to justice.
