ICC has no reason to investigate war crimes in Colombia: government

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has no reason to investigate war crimes in Colombia as the country’s courts are already doing so, Colombia’s ambassador to the ICC said Thursday.

Francisco Lloreda, who represents Colombia before the ICC, said on a Bogota forum that “members of the guerrilla, paramilitary and the security forces who are accused of committing atrocities are being prosecuted or have been convicted. The majority already is in jail,” reported RCN Radio.

The attorney responded to remarks made by deputy Prosecutor General Fernando Pareja, who had said that the ICC will look into all war crimes committed in Colombia.

Colombia ratified cooperation with the ICC earlier this year, which allows the court the prosecute crimes committed in the Andean nation that has been in a violent conflict for more than 45 years.
