Heavy Colombia rains leave 46 people dead and 250,000 homeless

The rains have caused landslides and floods in 247 municipalities of the country, Luis Fernando Correa, coordinator of the National Emergencies Directorate told the radio station. The worst-hit places are Antioquia, Bolivar, Cesar, Santander and Risaralda.Although the rains have diminished in the last two days, “they are expected to continue in the low watersheds of the Cauca and Magdalena rivers,” the expert said.Rescue workers have remained on alert as the above two rivers could flood large zones of the country’s northern region. The Colombian government has announced several measures to aid the victims in their efforts to reconstruct their homes and resume production, including offering them loans to buy new houses.Large shipments of medicine are sent to the hardest hit municipalities with illnesses that may occur after the floods. Some areas also received anti venom serum, because the wetness can result in an increased amount of snakes.
