Health officials end Bogota protests

Public health officials ended their occupation of two churches in the capital city of Bogota, which were organized to protest against the government’s recent declaration of a “social emergency” in health care.

El Espectador reported that the workers suspended the strike and will be meeting later today with the Ministry of Social Protection.

The strike was organized in response to the government’s declaration of a “social emergency,” and Uribe’s remarks that hospitals should eliminate administrators in public hospitals.

Hospital workers maintain that the government’s plan to privatize health care completely will drive up costs.
