Government to ignore challenge to Uribe’s referendum

The legal secretary of Colombia’s presidential palace announced that the challenge
brought by the Polo Democratico against President Alvaro Uribe
is inappropriate and will therefore not be taken into account when the
bill for the presidential re-election referendum is signed.

The government expects that when all relevant documentation arrives at Congress, it will be ratified and then referred to the Constitutional Court for review.

According to the government, there are two reasons why the challenge is invalid: Firstly, because the referendum bill is relevant to all presidents and not only Alvaro Uribe, and secondly, because all administrative acts pertaining to it are carried out due to management being in Colombia. Another example is when the government authorizes taxes, the Palace source explains.
