The Colombian government on Tuesday took control of the country’s drugs enforcement agency DNE because of corruption within the organization, which administers assets seized from narco-traffickers, according to Caracol Radio.
At 3PM on Tuesday, authorities from the intelligence branch of the Colombian police entered the DNE office in Bogota following evidence of irregularities in the handling of confiscated assets.
The Inspector General’s Office and the Comptroller have been appointed by President Juan Manuel Santos to conduct investigations into the accusations of corruption. At this point, it is unclear whether or not the DNE will be dismantled.
Santos announced over the weekend that the Colombian government would be intervening in a governmental office for reasons of corruption, but it was not announced until today which agency he was referring to.
Colombian Minister of the Interior German Vargas Lleras said there have been “hundreds of irregularities” noted in the DNE. The investigation will likely include many Congress members.
