The comptroller of Colombia’s third-largest department was one of nine officials to be arrested on Wednesday on charges of corruption.

Gustavo Espinoza Ferla and the other officials are accused of suspiciously awarding contracts to companies to the tune of $630,000 without going through the proper process.

The crimes allegedly occurred between 2007 and 2010, while the officials were working with the body that controls Social Security Funding, Caprecom, in Colombia’s southern Caqueta department.

The officials were arrested by the Prosector’s General’s Anti-corruption Unit (CTI) in Caqueta’s capital, Florencia, charged with embezzlement of funds, awarding contracts without fulfilling the required criteria, prevarication, the hiding of evidence, and fraud.

They have been taken to Bogota to face trial.
