FARC admits breaking ceasefire by accident

Colombia News

A FARC unit admitted Sunday that they attacked energy towers in central Colombia last week because they were unaware of the ceasefire.

In a statement from FARC’s 36 Front Sunday, the guerrilla group claimed that they attacked energy towers last week because “the order to ceasefire did not reach the guerrilla unit involved in these actions” at the time of the attack, reported weekly Semana.

The two pylons that were destroyed on November 20, less than 24 hours after the ceasefire was declared, were located in the northwestern Antioquia department, in the municipality of Campamento. The unit was allegedly unaware of the unilateral FARC ceasefire that was meant to start that same day.

Although the FARC has admitted to the energy tower attack, they are still denying the military’s allegation of a FARC attack in Cauca, also on November 20, by supposedly luring military into a minefield.

The unilateral FARC ceasefire was announced November 19 with the recommencement of peace talks between Colombia’s government and the FARC in Havana, Cuba. The ceasefire is meant to last until January 20.
