Court continues investigation against 86 Congressmen: W Radio

Colombia’s Supreme Court will continue the investigation against 86
Representatives for their allegedly illegal approval of the referendum

needed to re-elect President Alvaro Uribe, W Radio reported Thursday.

According to the radio station, sources from within the Court denied earlier reports the Court was ready to end the investigation without coming to an indictment.

Instead, the Court plans to request additional information to the country’s Registry and National Electoral Council to see if the Congressman should be charged with approving a bill knowing it failed the legal requirements.

There is controversy about the referendum, because Congress approved the referendum without waiting for the Registry to certify a previously held referendum. This referendum, crucial in the process leading to a change in the constitution that would allow Uribe a third term, broke regulations by allowing companies to donate sums of money above the legal limit.
