Foreign drug smuggler allowed to serve sentence in home country

A Bogota judge ruled that a young foreign drug smuggler is allowed to serve her prison sentence in her home country.

According to television network Caracol, the 18-year-old ‘Ekatherina’ from Estonia faces a 48 month sentence for ‘drug smuggling’ after she was caught at Bogota’s El Dorado airport with cocaine.

The young smuggler is currently spending her sentence in Colombia’s largest women’s detention center, El Buen Pastor correctional facility in the capital.

The defense, along with the girl’s family, successfully petitioned to have the 18-year-old repatriated to Estonia to complete her sentence.

According to lawyer Miguel Angel Ramirez, the family of the girl, who claims to have been lured into trafficking the drugs for the Colombian Mafia, have been living a drama ever since their daughter was caught.

The prosecution objects to the ruling and announced it will file an appeal. The prosecution wants the girl to serve the 48 months in Colombia.

A higher judge will rule on the appeal next Monday.
