Colombian signs renewable energy statute

Colombia’s ambassador to Germany signed a statute through which the Andean nation becomes a member of environmental organization the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

Colombia’s foreign ministry said in a press release that it hopes that its entry into IRENA – an German government initiative to address issues of global warming, population growth and energy consumption – “will act as a bridge to promoting efficient, clean and sustainable energy with the end of counteracting the effects of global warming and contributing to the creation of employment in order to expand the sectors in developing countries.”

IRENA seeks to promote the replacement of fossil fuels for renewable energy sources, as well as promote and strengthen environmental policy.

To date, 144 countries have signed the statue. At least 25 countries must ratify the agreement in order for it to enter effect, which IRENA hopes will be achieved in July this year.
