Colombian actress plays vampire in Twilight saga

Oscar-nominated Colombian actress Catalina Sandino Moreno features alongside Robert Pattison and Kristen Stewart as a teenage vampire in the third installment of the smash-hit “Twilight” saga.

This Friday will see the Colombian release of “Eclipse,” the third movie in the blockbuster series about vampires.

Speaking about her “small but important” role as a vampire named Maria, Sandino Moreno said, “Maria is trying to create a new army of ‘Newborn’ vampires who want to take over the world.”

“It was cool I was offered [the role] because I have never done a bad role, I’ve always played very, very real people,” said the actress, who made her name swallowing cocaine pellets in the hit film “Maria Full of Grace,” about a Colombian teenage drug mule. The film earned her an Academy Award nomination, as well as winning an Independent Spirit Award for writer and director, Joshua Marston.

Sandino Morena says she was more than happy, however, to enter into mainstream movie making, “Being a vampire is perfect, completely different.”

The third movie in the Twilight series is directed by David Slade and includes a wealth of Latin American actors, including Alex Meraz as teenage werewolf Paul, and Christian Serratos as a friend of the story’s main character, Bella (Kristin Stewart).

Sandino Moreno expressed delight at being part of a new generation of Latino film stars to feature in Hollywood blockbusters. “I feel fabulous … It find it interesting that there is this presence, even with small roles. They can give another hue to films aside from what you always see.”
