Colombian foreign debt remains at 21.1% of GDP

Colombia’s foreign debt reached US$46.509 billion in June, equivalent to 21.1% of the nation’s gross domestic product.

This shows an increase of 2 per cent from June 2008, when the total external debt totaled US$45.382 billion, according to the latest report from the Bank of the Republic.

On Monday, the Issuer announced that Colombia’s public sector debt totaled US$31.068 million (US$29.269 million in June 2008), while private sector obligations abroad fell to US$15.441 million (US$16.113 million in June 2008).

Meanwhile, public debt in the long term to June was US$28.526 million, while private debt totalled US$11.546 million, reports financial news source Portafolio.

Compared with the previous month, May 2009, saw foreign debt reach US$47 billion, representing 22.4 per cent of the gross domestic product. This compared unfavourably with May 2008 when Colombia’s foreign debt stood at US$45.7 billion, 18.8 per cent of the GDP.
