Bogota’s Salsa in the Park pays tribute to Fruko

This year’s annual Salsa in the Park event in Bogota will pay tribute to Julio “Fruko” Ernesto Estrada, a pioneer of Colombian salsa, who will play with his original band at the event’s 13th edition.

Bogota’s Philharmonic Orchestra will put on a special concert to celebrate the achievements and musical influence of the legendary singer.

Fruko, who over the last 40 years has done more than almost anyone else to popularize salsa music in Colombia, will headline the event devoted to his achievements, which will also see talent from around the nation, such as Maria Canela, Shock Orchestra, Sexteto Latino Moderno, as well as international guests the Spanish Harlem Orchestra.

Salsa in the Park is being put on by the Ministry of Culture, Recreation and Sport in conjunction with the Bogota mayoralty, and will include seminars and dance clinics “boosted by inter-generational dialogue and reflection on traditional and cutting-edge concepts.”

The event runs from August 21 to 22 in Bogota’s Plaza Bolivar.
