Construction of the new 35 meter concrete tunnel began last year, after the path up the hill was closed in April due to danger of landslides, and has since received an investment of over $900,000 from the district authorities.
According to a statement by the director of the Institute for Recreation and Sport, Ana Camacho, significant progress has been made on the new walkway, meaning that it should be open to the public by the planned date in March of this year.
“We have done the work planned to stabilize the ground. We have built sewers, paths, and completed construction of the walls,” the official said.
Camacho indicated that the only work left to do was path testing and cleaning.
According to the director the new path will serve to protect the thousands of people who visit the religious and historic site every year.
