Bogota Mayor will not resign: El Espectador

Samuel Moreno will not resign his position as mayor of Bogota, but he will adhere to the inspector general’s decision to suspend him for a period of three months for alleged involvement in the fraudulently awarding of public works projects, reported El Espectador.

Inspector General Alejandro Ordoñez made the decision Tuesday morning to suspend the mayor of the capital city for a period of three months because of irregularities he discovered while investigating the corruption scandal over the awarding of public works projects to the disgraced Nule Group construction firm.

After news of the inspector general’s decision broke, speculation as to what Moreno’s next step would be began to circulate.

Carlos Gaviria Diaz, the former president of the Polo Democratico party to which Moreno currently belongs, called for the resignation of the Bogota leader, telling Caracol Radio Tuesday that “I think that what he should do is withdraw from the exercise of office.”

The mayor, who was supposed to give a press conference at 10:00 AM Tuesday morning, has yet to make an official comment but sources close to him say that the city official will not resign his position, even though he will abide by the inspector general’s decision of suspension.

Inspector General Ordoñez has asked President Juan Manuel Santos to elect a temporary replacement for Moreno from the same Polo Democratico party.
