Attempted breakout at Bogota youth prison

A riot and attempted breakout at a juvenile detention center in southern Bogota on Tuesday left several people injured, including inmates, staff and police officers, reports Colombian media.

The riot occurred in the morning after prison authorities were alerted to the attempted escape of eight detainees, who tried to flee over the roof of the institution, located in the Tunjuelito district of Colombia’s capital.

A riot subsequently broke out in the detention center, leaving five inmates and three staff members injured.

The confrontation escalated, leading to the Bogota police and Mobile Anti-Riot Squad being called.

Authorities said that, despite initial concerns that some detainees had succeeded in escaping to a nearby school, all 381 inmates were found within the institution’s grounds.
