Atletico Nacional crowned Copa Postobon champions

Medellin’s Atletico Nacional won the Copa Postobon Wednesday after edging out Deportivo Pasto 2-0 in front of a rapt crowd at Atanasio Girardot stadium.

The first half saw an equal spread of possession with neither side able to break the initial deadlock.

Although Atletico National kept up an offensive rhythm for much of the game, it wasn’t until the 58th minute that the Medellin team made the decisive breakthrough. Macnelly Torres broke away from Pasto’s Wilson Galeano on the left wing, crossing the ball to Fernando Uribe, who finished of the manoeuvre in front of goal.

Atletico National’s Juan David Valencia sealed the “green” victory in the 79th minute, finishing off a well-timed attack by fellow teammate Aviles Hurtado.

Devoted fans, clad in the team’s traditional green and white, roared their approval at the sound of the full time whistle. Ignoring the poor weather, supporters then took to the streets to party and enjoy the fireworks.

Last night’s victory is the first Copa Colombia title for the Medellin-based club.
