With an average of 14.6 kilos consumed per person each year, the department of Antioquia is the country’s “king of pork.” According to the Colombian Association of Pork Producers, citizens of Antioquia eat much more than the average 4.5 kilos per person in the rest of the country.
This annoucement was made Tuesday at the Pork Fair, which was held by the Colombian Association of Pork Producers and then National Pork Fund.
Colombia has seen growth in pork consumption over the past year, according to Francisco Mario Correa, manager of Comercial de Idecampo.
“We have been moving into new distrubtion channels [over the past year] which will allow us to send the product to stores portioned and ready for consumption,” Correa said.
However, compared with the rest of the world’s average consumption of 16.3 kilos per person, Colombia’s pork consumption even in Antioquia is relatively low.
