600 police arrive to boost security in Bogota

Six hundred policemen have been called to Colombia’s capital Bogota by acting mayor, Maria Fernanda Campo, reported newspaper El Espectador.

The police will arrive on Monday and be welcomed with a celebration in Parque Tercer Milenio attended by the new mayor and President Juan Manuel Santos.

The additional forces will be used to reinforce security on the transportation system as well as strategic points throughout the city.

An area of particular focus for authorities will be Calle 26, where a priest was killed in an apparent cell phone robbery on May 13.

According to reports, better lighting is on the agenda to help increase safety in this part of the city.

Maria Fernanda Campo, Education Minister for the Santos administration, was appointed acting Bogota mayor by the president May 4 after Mayor Samuel Moreno was suspended by the inspector general for alleged corruption.
