A Monteria judge Tuesday sentenced FARC leader ‘Alfonso Cano’ and four
other important members of Colombia’s biggest rebel group FARC to 40 years
in jail for the 2001 massacre of 22 people in Tierra Alta, Cordoba.
The massacre occurred between May 22 and 29, 2001 when 200 FARC guerrillas entered the villages Sancon Manzo, La Gloria and La Palestina de Tierra Alta and murdered 22 people who the guerrillas suspected of supporting paramilitary groups.
According to the judge, evidence allowed to sentence Guillermo Leon Saenz Vargas, alias ‘Alfonso Cano’, Rodrigo Londoño, alias ‘Timochenko’, Luciano Marin Arango. alias ‘Ivan Marquez’, Jorge Briceño Suarez alias ‘Mono Jojoy’ and Jhoverman Sanchez alias ‘Manteco’ to 40 years imprisonment for aggravated murder and rebellion.
