7 judges withdrawn from wiretap trial

Seven Supreme Court judges were recused from the wiretapping trial of a former DAS director and the former chief of staff to ex-President Alvaro Uribe due to conflicts of interest.

According to Colombian media, the judges were direct victims of the wiretapping scandal in which former DAS director Maria del Pilar Hurtado and ex-President Alvaro Uribe’s chief of staff Bernardo Moreno are on trial.

The judges will be replaced by seven associate judges, leaving only two original Supreme Court judges.

Both officials were charged with conspiracy, the illegal interception of communication, abuse of public power, and fraud.
