6-year-old girl dies after falling 18 stories

A six-year-old girl who fell from the 18th floor of a Medellin apartment building Saturday was pronounced dead by hospital staff Wednesday.

The girl fell from a balcony in the upscale neighborhood of Poblado while being looked after by Alejandra Salazar Rengifo, the girlfriend of the girl’s father. Salazar was subsequently arrested by police Monday on charges of attempted murder. The charges can now be changed to murder since the girl’s death.

The investigation surrounding the incident began after the six-year-old told doctors, before losing consciousness, that she was “playing with someone near the balcony” prior to the fall.

Doctors announced Tuesday that the girl was clinically brain dead. She was pronounced dead at 1:35PM local time.
