5 missing after flood destroys house

Five people from a village in the central-Colombian Caldas department are missing after a flooded river swept away their house.

According to media reports, heavy rains caused the Oyeta gorge, which passes through the village of Pacora, to rise above the banks, destroying the house inhabited by the five missing persons.

The river also swept away a number of cars and motorcycles.

According to newspaper El Tiempo, the brother of the village fire chief is among those reported missing.

Thirty families have been evacuated from the town so far.

Heavy flooding in the Caldas department has caused a great deal of damage over the past year.

In late February this year, President Juan Manuel Santos warned inhabitants of the devastated regions to be on the alert for further flooding as a new rainy season.
