5 killed and 5 injured in mining accident in northern Colombia

At least five miners died and another five were injured in a mining accident in the north of Colombia Sunday.

The accident took place in Zaragoza, a mining municipality in the northeast of the Antioquia department, when around 10AM a shaft in the mine collapsed.

Colombia’s disaster prevention and attention agency announced the accident and that local emergency services had recovered the lifeless bodies of five miners from underneath the rubble.

According to the official version, four of the injured miners were taken to the hospital in Zaragoza while the fifth had to be taken to a bigger hospital in the town of Caucasia because of the seriousness of his injuries.

Mining authorities announced to visit Zaragoza for an inspection of the scene of the accident and an investigation of the cause of the fatal collapse of the shaft.
