5 killed, 4 injured in Medellin shooting

Five people were killed and at least another four were injured in Medellin Thursday evening when armed men opened fire at a group of people watching a neighborhood soccer game.

According to local authorities, a group of assassins approached the soccer field in the Comuna 6 in the northwest of the city and opened fire at those watching the game.

Among the dead are at least two minors.

A government official told press that “kids who belong to the “Bananeros” gang were watching the game and were probably attacked because of that.”

The official added that the suspected killers belonged to the rival “Cachorros” gang.

Medellin has suffered gang violence for decades. While city authorities claim homicides have been dropping over the past three years, these figures have been coinciding with increasing forced disappearance rates and an unprecedented cases of forced displacement within the city.
