5 dead, 20 injured in north Colombia bus crash

Five people were killed and 20 were injured on Tuesday when a bus traveling on a highway in northern Colombia hit a post.

The accident occurred on a stretch of highway between the towns of Cienaga and Fundacion, in the department of Magdalena, 900km north of Bogota.

Police sources claim that the bus entered the opposite lane and swerved off the road and into a post, in order to avoid a head-on collision with another vehicle.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals, and the authorities have opened an investigation into the incident.

The bus belonged to the Cootracegua bus company and was traveling along the Valledupar-Barranquilla route.
