Guerrillas kidnapped four women working with displaced people in the north-east Colombian Norte de Santander department on Tuesday, the governor told press.
Two of the victims work for human rights NGO Fundacion Progresar, one is an attorney, and one a government official working for the vice-presidency, governor William Villamizar said.
According to Villamizar, the kidnapping took place in a “difficult area” near the municipality of Teorama when the women were offering humanitarian aid to displaced taking refuge in the area.
The governor said that both the FARC and the ELN are active in the desert area.
According to Villamizar, there exists a “probability” that the women will be released shortly, without getting into detail.
Army troops were sent to the region to look for the hostages and their kidnappers, while Fundacion Progresar asked the Red Cross to intervene.
