3.5 tons of marijuana seized in northeast Colombia

Colombian police seized 3.5 tons of marijuana on Tuesday in the northeast department of Norte de Santander.

According to radio station Caracol Radio, the cannabis cache was seized from a “van-type truck” near the municipality of Chitaga, on the northcentral road that connects Bogota with the east. The vehicle’s interior was camouflaged to hide the drugs.

The driver was arrested and left at the disposal of the authorities who revealed that the marijuana came from the western Cali department and was being transported east to cross the border into Venezuela where it could reach international markets.

Authorities are trying to establish if the cargo belonged to criminal gangs that had drawn a new route for smuggling drugs.
