3,000 troops brought in to reinforce security in Bogota

Colombia’s army announced Thursday it will bring 3,000 additional troops to Bogota in order to increase security measures in the nation’s capital.

“This device is composed of men trained in different modalities that can handle any situation, be it a terrorist attack, accident or natural disaster,” according to the military.

The troops, belonging to the army’s 13th Brigade, will work alongside police forces to prepare for any potential threat.

“This strategy has been designed in conjunction with other authorities and has been tested and refined, looking for the highest effectiveness,” according to an army spokesperson.

Bogota suffered a terrorist attack May 15, when a bomb exploded in the city’s financial district, targeting former minister Fernando Londoño. The explosion killed 2 people and injured 39. Initial reports put the death toll at five.

Police have arrested several suspects linked to the FARC in connection with the attack.
