Highest volume of drugs seized in Colombia’s history: President Santos

National police have seized 94 tons of drugs in 2012, the largest amount seized in the nation’s history, said President Juan Manuel Santos Friday.

“Police this year have seized the highest volume of drugs in the nation’s history: 94 tons, which is 45% more than in 2011,” said Santos at a police promotion ceremony in Bogota.

Santos also praised the work of the police as the driving force behind the alleged dropping national crime rates in 2012.

“The murder rate per 100,000 inhabitants is the lowest in 30 years, and kidnapping for ransom has dropped by 21%, also a rate lower than it has been for many years,” claimed Santos.

Santos also noted that there has been a 39% increase in the number of arrests of paramiltary and guerrilla soldiers.

Santos closed his speech by contributing the ongoing success and development of the country to the police.
