11-year-old girl caught smuggling 74 phones, 1 gun into prison

An 11-year-old girl was caught Sunday trying to smuggle 74 cell phones and a gun into a Medellin prison.

The girl had the phones and weapon taped neatly to her torso as she attempted to visit her imprisoned brother, but was caught because guards became suspicious of her apparent obesity.

The minor was accompanied by her 25-year-old sister, who was arrested. The girl was brought to the Medellin office of Family Welfare where authorities hope to establish who told her to smuggle the items.

A prison official told newspaper El Colombiano that children are frequently used to smuggle prohibited goods into jail. According to the newspaper, women frequently smuggle phones, drugs and even knives hidden around their private parts.
