1,080 drug traffickers arrested in 2009

The Colombian National Police announced Friday that 1,080 drug traffickers were arrested in 221 operations in the first six months of 2009. Three of eleven drug trafficking organizations were shut down.

Of the 1,080 drug traffickers arrested, 190 of them were demobilized paramilitaries, according to the police.

615 fire arms, 47,068 rounds of ammunition and 18.4 tons of cocaine belonging to drug trafficking organizations have been seized so far this year, El Espectador reported.

Police said they captured 16 members of these criminal organizations in the last week.
