A bus accident on Sunday has left at least eight dead and more than 20 injured, after the vehicle overturned in a highway leading to Bogota.

At approximately 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, a Cootranshuila fleet bus with 31 passengers on board reportedly lost control and overturned along the Fusagasuga – Bogota highway, leaving 5 dead on the scene while three more died in the following hours.

The 25 to 30 wounded, of which at least six are in a critical state, were taken to the nearby Hospital San Rafael in Fusagasuga.

The accident reportedly took place between the towns of Fusagasuga and Silvania in Cundinamarca State, with the bus travelling from Neiva, the Huila State capital, to Bogota.

Among the dead, which include a 17-year-old and a 19-year-old of German nationality, appear the names of Rodrigo Ruiz, Carmen Martinez, Adriana Chavez, Cristian Hernan Santamaria, Paola Chavez y Hernando Perez.

Some officials state that the accident occurred due to a speed excess, while others reject the possibility as GPS intelligence shows that the bus, which belonged to the travel company’s latest VIP fleet, was travelling at 76 km per hour.
