Russia’s National Ballet company will perform at Medellin’s Pablo Tobon Uribe theater on October 19 and 20, marking the celebration of the theater’s 60th birthday.
After two sellout shows last year in Colombia’s second city, the ballet company said they were ”in love with Medellin,” adding that, ”we like the people because they are very friendly, very open. The climate of Medellin, too. Everything.”
The dance company is part of the Opera and Ballet Theater of Russia Sapaev, under the direction of choreographer Viatscheslav Gordeev, who is considered a representative of the world of ballet across the globe.
Friday will see a rendition of Don Quixote while on second night the company will perform Swan Lake, using extravagant costumes and impressive scenery while still keeping to some of the traits seen in traditional ballet.
The day before the shows were to begin the company hosted a master class for anyone interested, expressing the company’s 45 years of experience.
The Pablo Tobon Uribe theater was built in 1952, funded heavily by Colombian businessman and philanthropist Don Pablo Tobon Uribe, and was designed by the architect Nelson Rodriguez, with the intention of resembling the characteristics of some of Europe’s best theaters.
